Topic: What resources are available to Austin inventors and entrepreneurs?

Speaker: Alan Lish, Professor of marketing and entrepreneurship in the School of Management and Business of St. Edward's University in Austin, TX

Alan will discuss various resources for inventors and entrepreneurs in Austin, and the concepts you need in order to build a company.

Alan Lish is the founder and president of iMediaplus, Inc., a firm that has provided marketing and strategic services to specialty retailers nationwide since 1987. Those services include Web and Web content, catalog and direct mail, e-commerce and auction solutions uniquely optimized for specific vertical markets, as well as integration with existing legacy systems. He has been involved in retailing, technology and marketing for over 25 years, and has worked as a vendor and consultant to dozens of specialty retailers from boat dealers to golf stores to ski and snowboard shops. Working primarily with national retail buying groups and franchise groups, Mr. Lish has lectured on integrating technology into a business's marketing mix, and using technology to improve customer relations and retention. He has been involved in over a dozen start-ups over the years, and consults with businesses on marketing issues and strategies.

Mr. Lish has an MS from the University of Texas at Austin in science and technology commercialization, and a BA from Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He is a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship in the School of Management and Business of St. Edward's University in Austin, TX. He has won the George Kozmetsky Award from the University of Texas, and an Addy Award for excellence in print advertising from the Corpus Christi, TX Advertising Federation.

Dr. James Nolen, Professor of the graduate Entrepreneurial Harvest class, University of Texas in Austin, Texas

What makes a great business plan?

Jim Nolen received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. He has taught multiple sections of both the undergraduate and graduate small business finance classes since 1980. Current classes include two sections of the graduate Small Business Finance class and one section of the graduate Entrepreneurial Harvest class. His research and teaching interests include corporate finance, business valuation, mergers and acquisitions, entrepreneurship and capital formation for private enterprises. He lectures regularly in Executive Education and Management Development Programs on financial topics for companies such as TI, Dell, Freescale, Shell Oil, MD Anderson, Essilor and State Farm Insurance. Jim Nolen brings practical business experience from operating his own businesses, providing financial consulting services to privately held companies and serving on the board of directors of small and middle-sized firms. He served as Associate Director of The Center for Small And Middle-Sized Enterprises and The Community Minority Business Advancement Program for over 10 years

Speaker: Michael A. Davis, Jr.

For almost 15 years, Michael Davis has represented clients in a comprehensive array of technology transactions and intellectual property matters for developing, protecting and commercializing technology, including several venture-backed technology clients. The Austin Business Journal named Mr. Davis as one of Austin's 3 best attorneys in the field of "Technology/Intellectual Property" law (Best of Business Law 2004). He is a past President of the Austin Intellectual Property Law Association. Mr. Davis serves as General Counsel of multiple clients, including StarCore, LLC (www.starcore-dsp.com), which is a joint venture (co-owned by Freescale Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, and Agere Systems) that develops and licenses digital signal processor technology. Previously, he was a lead attorney for IBM at the Somerset PowerPC Microprocessor Design Center, which was a key strategic alliance between IBM, Motorola and Apple. In 2004, Gov. Rick Perry appointed Mr. Davis to the Texas Product Development & Small Business Incubator Board, which governs up to $45 million in economic development incentives for products and businesses in the fields of semiconductors, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and biomedicine. In patent matters, his experience covers business methods, software, Internet, video/audio standards (e.g., MPEG, JPEG, Dolby AC-3), digital & analog circuitry, microprocessor design, and semiconductor manufacturing. He has personally drafted or supervised several hundred original United States patent applications. In community matters, Mr. Davis is a member of Leadership Austin (class of 2004-2005), and he was founding Chair of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Austin. Also, he writes the weekly patent column for Austin Business Journal. Mr. Davis earned his B.S. in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center.

Mary Russell Sarao and Barbara Russell Pitts

Mary Russell Sarao and Barbara Russell Pitts are authors of “The Everything Inventions and Patents Book,” to be published in February 2006 by Adams Media. Mary has also written two popular e-books, “Super Easy Guide to Step-by-Step Patent Searching Online” and “Create a Compelling Presentation for your Invention,” that are offered without cost to visitors to their website, www.asktheinventors.com. Additionally, they have written for the United Inventors’ Association Newsletter and for the Texas Inventors’ Association Website, www.txinventors.com. As successful inventors and recognized experts on the subject, they have lectured extensively on the different areas of inventing and marketing at seminars, workshops and organizations around the country as well as appearing on radio and television talk shows. In 2001, they were featured inventors in the documentary film, “The Big Idea.” They have served on the board of directors of the United Inventors Association and are both current board members of the Texas Inventors’ Association. In July 2003, they were the subject of an article in the Dallas Morning News about their passion for assisting novice inventors that was picked up by the wire services and carried in newspapers nationwide. Mary and Barbara both reside in the Dallas area.

Topic: Patent Quality - Congress's Proposals for Patents and Patent Prosecution.
Speaker: O'Lene Stone, District Director, Congressman Lamar Smith

O'Lene Stone has been District Director for Congressman Lamar Smith for 12 years, assisting the Congressman in providing constituent services to the more than 650,000 residents of the five-county district he serves. Stone supervises Congressman Smith's district offices in Austin and San Antonio. A native of West Texas, Stone previously was a political journalist, working for 21 years for the San Antonio Light newspaper. Congressman Smith is Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Courts, Internet and Intellectual Property and is a senior member of the Committee on Homeland Security, the House Judiciary Committee and the Science Committee. He also serves on the House Ethics Committee and the House Steering Committee that appoints Members of Congress to committee positions.

The natural flow of data from the Revenue Plan, to the P&L, to the Blanace Sheet and Source and Uses of Cash (really Funds) are much easier to visualize and implement with the workbook model available in Excel and others.
