Topic: Protecting You Idea

Speaker: Sean Flammer

When business relationships sour, people call litigation lawyers. Sean Flammer is a litigation attorney at the Austin firm of Scott, Douglass & McConnico, LLP. He wants entrepreneurs to know some of the mistakes he’s seen people make so that they can avoid making those same mistakes.

Sean represents a wide variety of individuals, business entities, legal professionals, and insurers in complex commercial litigation. He practices in both state and federal court and practices both trial and appellate litigation. He represents plaintiffs and defendants. Representative cases include:

Represented a technology firm against a competitor and associated individuals in a case involving unfair competition, misappropriation of trade secrets, and alter ego claims.

Represented a start-up technology firm in litigation with a manufacturer. The case involved fraud and breach of contract and ultimately settled favorably for the client.

Second-chaired an arbitration where the parties disputed the right to over $10 million.

Sean is currently representing an individual and two European entities in defending suit involving breach-of-fiduciary duty claims.

Sean has also represented business entities and individuals in cases involving negligence and premises liability.

Before joining Scott, Douglass & McConnico, Sean clerked for the Honorable Phyllis A. Kravitch on the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit—a Federal appellate court. And before entering law school, Sean was a middle-school and high-school teacher as part of Teach for America. As a teacher—on a daily basis—he communicated complex ideas in a simple, understandable way. Sean believes this experience was invaluable in making him a better lawyer.

Sean graduated from the University of Texas School of Law with high honors and was selected to the Order of the Coif, a distinction given to those who graduate in the top 10% of their class. Sean was also on Law Review. He has been named a 2012 “Rising Star” by Texas Super Lawyers and Texas Monthly.

Topic: Product Inception to Market = Lossons Learned
Speaker: Steve Fridley, his company, Defender Innovations, Inc.

Bringing a product from inception to market can seem extraordinarily daunting, especially if funding is tight.

- Do I manufacture my product or license my invention?

- Do I fund it myself or look for investors?

- I'll relate my personal experiences from the time that my product was just an idea to market launch.

- Patent process, marketing, supply chain

- The emotional rollercoaster of funding and bringing a product all the way to market.

Bio: Steve has always been a do-it-yourself individual which has been the catalyst in developing his creative side and building a "can do" attitude. From a young age, he cultivated a passion for building it better and easier. He holds a degree in Mechanical Technology as well as a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from U.T. Austin. Steve says "I never fit into the mold of a typical engineer or a corporate businessman. I felt stifled and my creative energies took a backseat to the corporate lifestyle." Upon leaving the comfort and security of the private sector, Steve's creative side was finally unleashed. His new company, Patriot Manufacturing, L.L.C. is the culmination of that pent up creative energy. His first product design, BeamLOKR for Shotgun has received a resounding "thumbs up" in the market place.
